Hart Van Denburg/CPR News Greg Cummings, 63, on the Manitou Incline Friday, Nov. The Manitou Springs website labels the trail's difficulty as “Extreme (we promise we’re not kidding).” The 2,744 railroad tie stairs climb unevenly straight up a mountainside, with the steepest grade listed at 68 degrees. Illegal climbing of the left-over railroad ties led to the Incline eventually becoming an official hiking trail in 2013. It was kept around as a tourist attraction until a 1990 rock slide damaged the track beyond repair. The Manitou Incline is a former cable car track originally constructed to help with the building of pipelines along Pikes Peak. The Incline Club has more official times from when they used to “run” the Incline before the No Trespassing sign was put up in June of 2000 (scroll down page to see the times).Cummings thinks this new record may hold up for awhile, but he said that you never know with Roger. Pikes Peak Sports has a Manitou Incline honor roll. There are a few places with Manitou Incline times listed. Going this way down takes about 45-50 minutes at a quick walking pace with no stops. The most popular way and recommended way to get back down is to go to the left (when facing uphill) and then down the connector trail to the Barr Trail. There’s no way to magically end up back at the bottom so you need to factor coming back down into your hiking plans.Īlthough the rules for using the Incline stop short of prohibiting coming back down the Incline, they recommend one way up for safety. These times and the times people talk about are just for going up the Incline. Stop timing at the last tie at the top.ĭon’t be fooled by these times. My best time over 10 years ago was 29 1/2 minutes. I have some friends that can hike the Manitou Incline in the low 20 minutes. Times of under 20 minutes for world class athletes pass around the local hiking community and in news articles. So how long does it take people to hike up it? The Manitou Incline is just under a mile but climbs 2,000 vertical feet. ![]() ![]() Since then she has been a primary fixture of the side and one of the star players. Although I’m s(h)ure the 57s would take no damage from being supplied 48v phantom power, but I’ll avoid it if I can. On both interfaces 48v phantom power can only be toggled for inputs 1-4 and 5-8, and I like to keep phantom power mics separate to anything that doesn’t require it, like the SPD-SX. I’ve set it up this way because all the Earthworks require 48v phantom power and I also want those high quality mics to have the better pres of the Clarett. I have 2 Shure SM57s running to inputs 3-4 of the Saffire which are channels 13-14 and finally I have an AT2050 for my talkback mic running to input 5 on the Saffire, which is channel 15. My SPD-SX is running to inputs 1-2 of the Saffire which are channels 11-12. ![]() I’m not using inputs 9-10 but they are the S/PDIF. My Earthworks mics are running to inputs 1-8 on the Clarett and they are of course channels 1-8. I set the Saffire to “internal” and the Clarett to “ADAT” clock sources. What you want to see on for both interfaces is “locked” light. If you don’t see both of them on, try swapping the internal clock source. For example I needed to set the sync source to be my Saffire for both the Saffire and the Clarett, and make sure both devices are set to the same sample rate. For me this seemed counterintuitive as the Clarett is the master for this set up, but my DAW would not show all the inputs if the Clarett was the sync source. The two most important things when connecting the 2 interfaces is to make sure they are synchronised and locked together. I updated my 2019 MacBook Pro to Big Sur and can report that Saffire Mix Control actually works fine. Note that Saffire MixControl software is supported on macOS Catalina, but this is the last officially supported version. ![]() Saffire Mix Control has an awful UI that feels like it’s from the 90s in comparison to the cleaner Focusrite Control, as you will see below. Since the Clarett is a more up to date device it connects to the Focusrite Control software but the Saffire connects to the older Saffire Mix Control software. I used this to send a signal back in to the Saffire to get more headphone mixes. If you really want to experiment you can have 2 ADAT cables running from the outputs to the inputs of both interfaces for more communication options. Here is the one I purchased which was pretty cheap and nice and short to fit cleanly in the back of the rack. (Stay tuned for a future post on sample rates and bit depth!) You connect the ADAT output of one interface to the ADAT input of your master interface. You just need a TOSLINK ADAT cable which is an optical cable, much like how fibre optic broadband works. If - like me when I began this journey - you have absolutely no idea what these are let me do a quick summary ĪDAT is a standard for the transfer of digital audio between equipment and it supports up to 8 audio channels up to 48 kHz, 24 bit. It’s possible to send higher sample rates but for our purposes we will disregard that as 44.1kHz and 48kHz will serve most people. In order for this to work you are going to first need your 2 interfaces. They are going to need to be expandable interfaces which means they need to have either ADAT or S/PDIF connections. Fast forward to the current COVID situation and being stuck in lockdown I decided to make the most of it and finally connect my two interfaces together to give me 16 inputs, and also 4 headphone outputs! So in 2018, with the money I’d made on the ship I finally upgraded my interface to a shiny new USB-C one! I picked up the Focusrite Clarett 8Pre which is fantastic, and even though at the time I knew little about the world of pro audio I kept hold of my old Saffire because I knew it was possible to connect them somehow. I was working on cruise ships and dabbling in recording while at home, so wasn’t essential but I knew I would need to sort this out at a later time. I got a Windows PC to keep me going which while it had quite a few ports, was lacking any Thunderbolt or FireWire. Unfortunately my trusty MacBook Pro died on me in 2016 and with it went my only FireWire port. It was a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 and connected via FireWire, which has almost disappeared now! It was my first dive into the world of audio recording gear and at the time I was a student at Berklee College of Music. ![]() I bought my first audio interface back in 2013. ![]() ![]() ![]() Every scenario in Hard West is designed to tell a specific story-stopping an execution, defending a homestead, freeing a prisoner-and every enemy is placed. These aren’t randomly generated missions, either. But after all that mindless work, one bad move in the ensuing firefight and I had to do it all again (though the second time I just opened fire immediately, which I'm thankful is sometimes an option). Stealth is pretty silly in Hard West, because the guards don’t move from turn to turn, so you can just dutifully click where their vision cones aren’t. In one, for instance, I could sneak around guards freeing three prisoners. And parts of several missions are an absolute bore. I’m not attached to them, I just want them to live so I don’t have to do the whole mission over. The vital characters don’t create a fun sort of tension. ![]() Time to start over, as there’s no mid-mission saving. Or, I tried something risky and failed, and there’s no coming back from that. Because Hard West takes line-of-sight very seriously-to the point of being irritating-I occasionally moved characters into what seemed like a safe position, then watched as an enemy strolled out from behind a building and blasted them in the back. And they're fragile: caught out of cover, most of your gunslingers will eat dirt after one or two hits. Many characters are vital to the story, and must survive. On the default difficulty, Hard West is manageable-I breezed through some scenarios-but everything can end very suddenly. There are guns that can only hold a single shot, and special abilities that require all your action points, so sometimes it’s best to reload, wait until the next turn, and then move into a dangerous position and take a shot-hoping it kills the danger. In Enemy Unknown, needing to reload was an, 'Oh crap, I forgot to reload moment,' but here it's more a part of my planning. Reloading only takes one action point, for instance, so it’s possible to reload and shoot on the same turn, so long as you don’t move. It’s no clone, though: Hard West differs from XCOM in many little ways, sometimes for the better. There are bunches of stat boosting or usable items to find or buy-poison grenades, doses of opium, magic relics-along with special abilities and weird, experimental guns to pass out to your crew before combat.Ī character’s ‘luck’ depletes when a shot misses them, making it more likely the next will hit. A hungry gunman is weaker, and a cursed or poisoned frontier explorer won’t shoot well at all. (I really wanted that gold.) These are cool little vacations between fights, not nearly as elaborate or gorgeous as something like 80 Days, but interesting for how they affect the turn-based combat, which is really the main act. I also went too far into one crumbling mine and busted one of my character’s hands. At one point, I had the option to build an escape tunnel under my homestead (for a price), which let me sneak in during a combat encounter later on. ![]() In one story, my posse-always represented by a skull which floats between locations-wandered the map mining gold while a crime lord siphoned the profits. The stories are a bit banal, cobbled together from the most basic components of the acid western genre-betrayal, lost treasure, pacts with the devil, curses, chapels, and shamans-but their telling is a fun hodgepodge of systems and decisions. ![]() The voiced narration is excellent and the writing is efficient. Hard West is told in a series of short frontier stories which play out as choose-your-own-adventure-style text prompts on an overworld map, and in XCOM-like turn-based combat scenarios. ![]() |
